ParticipantJust as it says, would you be for or against racing in the rain? I’m not talking about just the Greeley race, but ALL CSC events. I’m personally all for it. It’s one of the most fun times I’ve had in a kart!
From an economic standpoint, a lot of people pay big bucks to travel and race and if it were to rain, they don’t get to do what they shelled out for.
The CSC has been lucky for the past few years and hasn’t had a rained out race…..yet. With 9 races on this year’s schedule, I’ll bet that changes real quick.

Participant2nd that motion…………we race in the rain up here in Canada……and just think about the Florida guys and how much experience they get. I think it would just make us all better, and i think we have a FAST growing level of national drivers who should get the experience. Just my 2 cents.

ParticipantAbsoutly T,
This will also help you guys who venture out to national races. Keeps your rain skills and set-up’s in check too.We definetly need the practice in wet conditions. Last year at Black Rock was a real wake up call on us when it rained during the pre main.

Very true. Norman, OK was my wake up call. 3 days of monsoon type rains and we raced in it. Take a look at this month’s KartSport and you’ll see what I mean. First time in the rain and boy, there are so many things that you have to do different from dry racing. Like you said Curt, keeps the skills up.

ParticipantDitto. Two of the three Nationals we’ve attended had at least some rain (though not the monsoon rains that Taylor experienced–thank goodness). Certainly adds a challenge–and the racers from most of the rest of the country are used to it, putting us at a disadvantage.

ParticipantGranted i’ve never driven a kart in the rain before, but i hear that it’s a great way to fine tune your skills in the dry. My vote is for yes, i’d like to try it.

How many sets of rain tires did you have to use for the race weekend in OK?
How many sets do yo think other drivers used?
I would have to have more info on how many sets are allowed before I could make a vote. New tires for a final against tires that had been ran in the pre-final and qualifying wouldn’t be fair and could get real expensive.
Rain racing is great though.

ParticipantI too would think rain or shine should be in the rules.
Yet we do seem to have a little different type of weather patterns that make racing in the rain more like racing in a storm. The weather moves fast, lots of wind and sometimes hail and lightening is acompanied with the rain. I just don’t know how it would pan out when most of our rain storms are shorter than most races.
Heck the places I have been working in Colorado this year, I haven’t seen a day with out snow yet.May 9, 2006 at 2:17 pm #53713Doug Welch
ParticipantAt the club level, rain racing should be up to the locals but in general, no. At the region al level, yes, they should run in the rain. It helps prepare those who aspire for more as at the national level it’s a definte yes.

Since Norman was a double race weekend (qualify, heat and main on both sat and sun) I used 2 sets of rains. It looked to me that other drivers, even factory drivers, didn’t use more than 3 sets.
You have to remember though that we had 3 days of solid rain in Norman. That length of a rain storm is unlikely here in CO and thus 1 set of rains in the trailer would do.Because the CSC only does single race weekends, I would highly doubt that you would need practice rain and racing rain tires.

ParticipantThe CSC definatley should run in the rain, you really cannot experiance karting to the fullest extent until you have run in the rain. As for tires, we were the only ones running used tires in norman in the final (since we had a million crashes in the prefinal we were starting in the back anyway) and were able to do it ok, provided I got crashed again my results dont really show, but it wasent the biggest deal, at this level (CSC) it will not matter that much.

InactiveSo far most who have posted here are racers with national experience, who also have some used sets of rain tires stashed somewhere. Me included. I am just looking to have a level playing field for those who would not have the tires at their disposal. IMO we would need to have a tire rule that limited a kart to 1 set for the whole day and that would include day of race practice. If someone had only 1 set they probably would not practice in the rain, trying to save the tire for qualifying or racing. this would give a huge advantage for the drivers that had multiple sets for practice and races.
Also, would the CSC declare a wet condition like SKUSA did or would it be optional. Doug probably recalls a day in Canada when this cost us a lot of unnecessary money when it was declared wet and the tracked dried while we were preparing for the wet.
Again, I agree racing in the rain is fun and an experience that all drivers should have. Just needs to be controlled in some way.
Like Mr. Freeze stated, the races usually last longer than the storm. So all this conversing is probably not necessary.
Maybe I should look at the rule book, all this might be covered there.

That was quite a weekend. Qualifying on wet tires in the dry not only cost us a set of tires but really screwed up the starting order. A lot of fast guys were in the back! If I remember right, that was Kyle’s first PMT podium.
I agree with Bill, we have plenty of tires accumulated over the years both new and used (including a couple of different brands). If it was a wet race and a guy didn’t have a set, I would certainly give them one of my used sets.
A rule of one set for the day would be good. Brand and type should be open so that we can use up our old stuff.

InactiveWe are a little ignorant about racing in the rain but would not mind racing in wet conditions. I do think having to run whiskers is impractical. Running two classes would mean showing up to a race with $720.00 worth of new tires! (if I understand corecctly) 2 new set’s of wet’s as well as the normal 2 set’s of dry tires.
I agree with Taylor that our stroms are usually short in duration generally. So if we use a set in qualifying or prefinal or whatever, why couldn’t we share tires between the karts or use a set that is not new each day for each kart.

ParticipantIf it rains I’ll take a drop. It seems some people must have money falling out of the sky.
