InactiveI have only 6 interested parties in a Beginners Rotax Class.
Unless others step forward it is not enough to make it worth while for all of us.
Need between 15-20.
I will post a couple more times and see if we get any more.
Interested parties, so far are:
Larry Toby
Scott Umbright
Randy Turner
Jocelyn and Dan Wilmot

ParticipantThere are not 15-20 newbies with a Rotax as far as I know in the Denver area. I guess I should ask what a newbie is in your opinion Rich. It looks like your list is all the newbies.

ParticipantAs a newbie I expressed interest because I’m hungry for any information. However, I’m concerned that the class you have outlined is exclusively Rotax orientated. Do you have any interest in broadening the scope? Or does anyone else have an interest in offering a new driver general orientation type of course?
BTW, I did get my first kart – a barely used TaG kart with a Leopard engine. I’m still on the fence on what to get my sons. While leaning toward Rotax I’m concerned about an engine that doesn’t produce its own power for iginition or charging. I’ve owned over 100 motorcycles, cars, trucks and tractors and have never seen such a design. Seems devious to me. 😯

ParticipantThe Rotax ignition and battery system works fine. I’ve got 2 batteries, both almost 1 1/2 years old. I keep them charged up and I always swap batteries before qualifying and leave it that way for the races. I’ve never had any problems.
As for nothing else using this system, this is exactly what I used to do in Formula Vee where we removed the generator for weight and performance reasons. If anything, the Rotax is better in this regard because the batteries last longer than the ones in my FV.

I would not be concerned about this. The Rotax battery has more than enough power providing you charge it. I put mine on charge for an evening before I plan on going out and have never had problems. Some people leave them on charge all the time.
BTW, depletion mode ignition systems are used on ALL high performance race cars. Heck, we even used to remove the mags from race JetSki’s back in the 80’s. Why rob precious horsepower to charge the battery that you have to lug around anyway, just remember to charge it beforehand. Nascar, IRL, drag racing, etc, etc, use depletion mode ignition systems.

InactiveWell where should I start:
***I am only familiar with the Rotax and the 125 Honda. Therefore I would not feel confortable with anyother motor but the rotax
***Newbies to me are individuals with 0-2 yrs rotax experience that want some hints, things to do/look for, explanations, etc.
***As to how many are out there: I don’t know how many are new Rotax drivers entering for 2005. With only 6 interested parties-that is still not enough as there is usually steep attrition when you start applying dates.
***One solution may be to tie some other motor instructors-Leopard/Sonic/Biland/etc into one course several sessions-Anybody going to step forward.
Of course Blink-how did you pick that name?-would like you to buy a Biland and not a rotax.
I am selling my DFM/Rotax-Any buys??????? I want to buy a new set up-CRG Kali/Rotax or Arrow/Rotax

ParticipantRich,
I’ll do my best to attend. I never know what the army is going to do with me next so I will try. I do have two seasons with my Rotax but only about 15 races total. I would like to learn more and I would help others with what I have learned. Tricks and the “this works for me” ideas.

ParticipantSorry Rich for taking this subject slightly off topic. I’m still interested in a class.
As for “depletion mode ignition systems” I still have my doubts but trust the feedback from your personal experiences. I’ve never owned a race car, although my son plans to change that down the road. I saw a recent post where someone had a problem with a Rotax. He got lots of replies including battery replacement suggestions so it doesn’t appear bullet proof. But hey, if its good enough for NASCAR and other folks far more talented than I then it should be good enough for me and my family.
As for removing mags in the 80’s for more horsepower… sounds a little like the motorcycle guys who used to pull the baffles out of the tuned exhaust systems for more power. Results – detuned engines that made more noise. 😀

InactiveLarry,
No you brought up something that made me think.
Maybe we could expand on not just rotax stuff but other engine types and thus have more interest.
This is to expand the Colorado kart scene-more karters and share more information and to make new racers confortable.
Others will have to step forward on the other engines.

InactiveFINAL CALL FOR INTEREST IN A NEWBIE ROTAX CLASS:
To date I have the following interested parties:
Larry Toby
Scott Umbright
Randy Turner
Jocelyn and Dan Wilmot
Richard Carr
Cory & Gina Johnson
Rebecca Hajaj
Mike Hurley
JJW–who is this?Okay it is now 11 interested parties.
Nobody came forward being a other type motor instructor, so can’t pull from other engine types.
Still not enough. Some are from West slope and others will have other committments on scheduled days. For me to prep for this type of seminar, I am looking at ~10 hrs (syllabus, outline, back-up articles, resources, packets, ready sections of kart for ready tear downs to see internals, etc).
Need 15-20 or no go. Yes this may not be feasible as Blink puts it.
I have some other ideas floating around with my other marbles that may be of interest.

ParticipantI think that the results will be more than you think, the two info meetings were well attended last year. Maybe you and Doug Welch can get togrther for a weekend of set ups and engines. I will be there thanks for the effort Rich 😆
