ParticipantHello all,
I want to start racing next season and I’m curious which class I should start in. I have my SCCA liscence which I got in a Formula Ford when I was 18. I get the impression I should start in a 125 shifter but I’m not sure. Where should I start?

Inactiveshifter or tag
Your learning curve in a shifter takes longer and you will have stiff competition. Be ready ti run in the back for awhile. It will also be more expensive
go Tag masters where the good guys race!

ParticipantWhat’s your name?
Come out to the track this weekend. People will be practising all day saturday for a largish race on Sunday. People will talk your ear off (me included). Ask ALOT of questions, everyone is happy to share.

ParticipantTalk to Brad at IMI. He has the latest 4-stroke tag motors that will whip any 2-stroker, including shifters. He is starting new classes next season.

InactiveIf shifter is the path you decide to take, there are different classes in that, some of which cost more and have more of a high maintenence level involved. To start out in a shifter, I would recommend a Stock Moto, Spec 125 … i don”t know what the street name is these days. They are cheap, low to no maintenence, and there are tons of them! so you are bound to find somebody to race against.
TaG is also a great way to start out karting, you aren’t required to learn as many things such as shifting and fixing stuff (as much), but you will need to learn the fast, and most momentous way around corners. TaG is a great way to figure out how to drive a track, not let the motor do all the work.
Hope you have some luck in your decision!

ParticipantThat all depends on what you want out of karting…
Want to truley know / learn how to drive – TaG
Want to look / sound cool, shift gears, spend more, be in the back chasing everybody… Shifter
If you want to do it right – learn how to drive first (not taking anything away from your FF experience), then progress to shifters. TaG is NOT that much slower than shifter, and for a beginner – shifters build bad driving habbits.
I’m one of the guys shifting, in the back, and chasing everybody – look me up this weekend…

ParticipantThanks for the info guys. I went out to the Track on Sunday and got some great info. I think I’ve narrowed it down to Stock 125 shifter or Tag Senior. I was really interested in the four strokes running in Senior Tag. I would like to get into a kart that can make it an entire season (or at least half) without getting into the motor. Please keep the suggestions coming.

InactiveGo out and test drive some karts. See Brad/Jim/George or JB. I am sure these track owners would love to sell you a kart.
Take a look at some kart shops-SAC Motors & Tim George, Billet & Barry, Shockwave & Doug. I am sure they would let you test drive some.

ParticipantIf you want an engine that will last a while, TaG and spec 125 are the best. My suggestion for TaG is a Rotax engine simply because they are very long lasting.

ParticipantThanks for all the advice everybody. I bought a 2004 Margay Brava 4 with a Biland 250. It will arrive on Wednesday and I’ll shake it down this weekend at The Track. Look forward to racing with you all next season!!
