SSC Racing is proud to announce that it has added IMI Motorsports of Dacano, Colorado, to its dealer network. IMI Motorsports will now carry the full line of CRG chassis, Rotax Max engines, and Maxter engines.

IMI Motorsports was founded in 1982 by Brad Linkus, with the IMI Motorsports Complex opening in 1989. The facility features eight tracks for motorcycles and quarter midgets, as well as the one-mile kart track. IMI Motorsports also has an 18,000 square foot shop that features the largest karting inventory in the Mountain states area of the country, with close to one hundred karts for sale.

In addition to carrying the SSC Racing product line, IMI Motorsports will also be running a Rotax Max Challenge race series in conjunction with the club series that is run at the track.

“We are happy to be a part of the SSC Racing dealer network,” said Linkus. “CRG karts are a high quality package with has many karts to offer the racer and hobby driver. We have also been servicing Rotax karts since they were imported to the USA. We have history with both product lines and are looking forward to continuing and growing our Rotax Max Challenge.”

Strengthening the Rotax program in Colorado was a goal for SSC Racing, especially on the heels of having had last year’s Rotax Grand Nationals in the state.

“We’re extremely happy that IMI Motorsports has joined our dealer network,” said Joe Ramos, president of SSC Racing. “They have a great shop and facility, and will no doubt help us to grow Rotax racing in Colorado.”

Shockwave at 2008 Rotax Grand Nationals

Date: 9/29/2008
Press release, for immediate release

Shockwave Karting used the recent Rotax Grand Nationals to introduce their new, all American made chassis to the karting world. The kart we used was the first production model from the firm to use American sized and manufactured tubing. Some might think it a bit risky to take a brand new model to such a prestigious event but we looked at it as a chance to see exactly where we stood. With a modest goal of running in the top ten, we were heartened to often run in the top three. If not for a bit of unfortunate racing luck, it could have been much better.

The team rolled into the picturesque track in Shawano, Wisconsin on Friday-just in time for the first day of unofficial practice. With a driver, Greg Welch, who had never seen the track in person and a kart that had not turned a wheel before Saturday morning, many of the rail birds didn’t give the Shockwave Karting team much of a chance. But after a few sessions to fine tune the kart and to get the driver used to the undulating surface, it was game on. By Sunday afternoon, the kart was definitely one of the top 5. By Monday, it was one of only two or three to break the 1 minute mark. In fact by Sunday afternoon, the Shockwave Karting driver was never passed again but once on track in any practice or race session! However, a lot of drivers saw the rear number panel of the 45 kart.

The first round of official practice was Wednesday morning and with everyone running transponders, there were no more secrets. In the first timed session, Greg was third quick. In the second, 5th quick. The word quickly spread, the Shockwave kart was fast, very fast. A few more changes took the kart in the wrong direction so we fell back in the charts a bit. But we knew what we needed to do, and were looking forward to qualifying.

At the start of qualifying, everything started according to plan. However, as so often happens in racing, things you can’t control happen. On Greg’s first flying lap, two drivers ignored the grid marshalls and entered the track without permission. They came on to the track directly in front of Greg. Worse, they decided to go two abreast in the racing line at slow speed and Greg was at full tilt. Greg had nowhere to go but into them. The race officials made the correct call in penalizing the two offending drivers, but the damage was done. Greg’s warm up was his only timed lap and was only good for 23rd. Not where we wanted to start. This meant that Greg would be starting 11th and 12th in the heat races.

Just because you start in the middle of the pack doesn’t mean you have to stay there. While 8 laps doesn’t give you much time, Greg quickly moved up finishing 6th, 4th and 6th in the three heats. Each time Greg’s best lap times put him the top 3 or 4 karts, all the while passing karts. We looked forward to the pre-final where Greg’s good heat race results earned him a 11th starting spot.

In the pre-final, Greg was again on the move. Before the second lap ended, Greg was already in 8th spot looking for more. It was clear he was one of the quickest karts on the track. However, his run came to an end too soon. Greg’s throttle stuck wide open! Driving a kart in the rain at full throttle is not something any driver wants to experience. Greg dropped out and was classified in 34th.

Starting the main event in 34th was not where Greg wanted to be. But those are the cards we were dealt, so we looked forward to moving up. In the main Greg did move up, all the way to 10th. Greg passed a lot of karts under green flag conditions.

Our goal for the event was finish the main in the top 10. We did that. But for a little luck, we could have done much better. The new Shockwave Karting chassis performed beyond our expectations and proved to be very competitive. For more information on Shockwave Karting and our full line of American made chassis, please see our web site at http://www.shockwavekarting.com or call us at 800-608-3457.
